Mustangs complete season sweep of Klippers

The Melfort Mustangs won their fourth and final meeting against the Kindersley Klippers on Wednesday night, officially completing the 2024-25 season series sweep.

Melfort secured the 4-1 victory at home, as Madden Mulawka made his first appearance since Nov. 29, backstopping the team to a win, while improving to a personal record of 9-0.

The Mustangs have now won back-to-back games since their record-tying 17-game win streak was snapped last Tuesday by the North Stars, and are now an extremely impressive 19-1 in their last 20, and 30-5 on the year.

The Stangs opened Wednesday night’s game with Will Munro’s fifth of the season, less than seven minutes into the first period.

A 1-0 lead for the Blue and Green would hold deep into the second period when Logan Belton doubled the score with his 18th of the year, with exactly six minutes left on the clock.

Kindersley would score their only goal of the game to cut the lead back to one, just before time ran out, as the only goal given up by Mulawka, on 18 shots faced, was a Zakery Anderson penalty shot with just 37 seconds remaining.

Now 2-1 with Melfort heading to the third period, the Mustangs made sure to get back some insurance with Zach Turner’s sixth of the season with just over 13 minutes to go. Then, in the final minute of play, Nic Andrusiak also scored his sixth of the year.

Andrusiak also had an assist on the night, while captain Ty Thornton had a pair of helpers.

Other point-getters for the Stangs included league-leading scorer Reilley Kotai, as well as Zac Somers, Ashton Hutchinson, and Cole Unger.

The Blue and Green, who still sit atop the SJHL standings, will next play on Friday when they head to Yorkton to face the Terriers.

The defending champs just beat the Terriers in their first matchup of the year with Yorkton, this past Saturday at the Northern Lights Palace, by a score of 5-1.
