Hawks host Humboldt Tuesday at ‘Cage’

The Humboldt Broncos will make their first visit to Nipawin to take on the Hawks in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action Tuesday.

The Hawks and Broncos split the two games they have met this year including Nipawin winning 1-0 backed by Gage Roberts first career SJHL shutout. The Broncos outscored the Hawks 7-5 in the other contest at the Elgar Petersen Arena.

Nipawin hasn’t played since Jan. 12, a 7-1 loss in Kindersley. Nipawin hasn’t won since Dec. 13 in La Ronge and has only one point in their last nine games. Head Coach Tad Kozun said the team regrouped over the nine-day break.

“We were able to shore up a few things and get some things worked on that we obviously need to fix. We have 20 games left, we’re not going to look past tonight but we must go out there and be the team we know we can be,” Kozun said.

Prior to a loss on Dec. 14 at home to the Ice Wolves the Hawks had a four-game point streak including three wins, widening the outlook Nipawin had points in six of eight and four victories. The 2025 calendar year hasn’t been positive for the group, especially the last three games where the Hawks have been outscored 18-3 in three games. Kozun said since the Christmas break the team hasn’t been up to standard.

“We haven’t put in the effort we’ve need to, and we haven’t been able to execute to the standard we have here. We must find a way to get back to that and get back to playing the Hawks way, Hawks hockey, and the way we can,” he said.

Tuesday’s showdown will be just the second home game of 2025 and the second since the Hawks hosted Yorkton on Dec. 10. Kozun said being back on the ice twice at home this week will hopefully get the team back on a roll.

“It’s going to be nice to get back on home ice and a normal routine again,” Kozun said. “We have games coming up in February where we will be on the ice a lot, so it’s got to start tonight, we need to get back to what made us successful earlier on this season.”

Faceoff is 7 p.m.
