Mustangs head to Flin Flon looking to end Bombers’ streak

Feb 1, 2025 | 6:48 PM

The Melfort Mustangs are heading north to battle with Manitoba’s lone SJHL team.

Melfort will face the Flin Flon Bombers tonight for the first time since Nov. 8.

The Mustangs are 3 and 2 on the year against Flin Flon, with every game being won by the home team.

The Bombers are the only team to have beaten the Stangs twice this season.

Melfort is coming off just their sixth loss of the campaign, last Saturday, falling 4-1 to the Nipawin Hawks at the Cage.

Now another division rival, on the road, in a small rink is the test for Saturday night, as the Blue and Green will need more compete should they want to come out on top.

Assistant Coach Tye Scherger referred to his team as soft after last week’s game, not battling hard enough in the corners.

Not a good recipe for success in any matchup, but especially not one in the Whitney Forum.

The Mustangs have had a week to stew on the loss to the Hawks in Nipawin, as the SJHL has just returned from their Showcase break in Manitoba.

Nine Stangs players were at the SJ/MJ Showcase in Winnipeg earlier this week, with Head Coach Trevor Blevins having explained after the event was over that his team should get a bit of a boost from it.

There is also a significant importance to this particular contest in Flin Flon, as the Bombers are on a fairly substantial streak.

Flin Flon hasn’t lost in regulation in 24 straight games.

That has brought the Bombers to within just four points of the Blue and Green, albeit Melfort has three games in hand, as it’s 1 vs. 2 tonight.

Five of the six losses for the Mustangs have come away from the Northern Lights Palace this year, so the defending champs may even be underdogs tonight.

That being said, this confident and consistent Stangs group will be well-prepared and motivated, to become one step closer to the season-series win.

The sixth of eight matchups on the year begins with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop as the Blue and Green look to walk away with two points at the Zoo.
