Hawks make final trek to La Ronge Tuesday

Feb 11, 2025 | 12:40 PM

The Nipawin Hawks will travel to La Ronge for the final time this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) regular season Tuesday.

The Hawks look to build off a positive week that included a shootout loss to Melfort and a win over Flin Flon.

The lone game in the SJHL on the schedule, Nipawin and La Ronge will meet for the seventh time this season, the Ice Wolves have six wins, the Hawks have the last one at the Mel Hegland Uniplex on Dec. 13. Head Coach Tad Kozun said despite the departure of Conor Ryan and Aiden Bruce to teams in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) this week his teams’ mindset hasn’t changed.

“It’s been a wild couple days with two players leaving, but that doesn’t change the process for us, it’s simply next man up mentality,” he said after the team’s game day meeting. “We are short staffed now with just 20 players, but let’s see what these guys can do with their opportunities over the final dozen games starting tonight in a tough barn.”

The Hawks are officially on the cusp of being mathematically eliminated from the playoff race. La Ronge is in the middle of the chase trying to use two games in hand on Kindersley to close the gap from ninth to eighth from 39 points to 47. Kozun said the chance to play spoiler against a division foe is motivation enough for his group.

“Yeah, they are battling for their playoff lives, they will want these two extra games on the schedule, and we need to be prepared for that. For our group, we can play spoiler and put a dent in the Ice Wolves chances tonight. It’s not going to be an easy night for the guys, but it’s another chance for us to get better and continue our process of where we want to go,” he added.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m., the pregame show of Nipawin Chrysler Dodge Hawks Hockey on 750 Beach Radio begins at 7:15 p.m.
