Mustangs’ Roberts recognized as RBC Community Ambassador

During this past week’s busy stretch for the Melfort Mustangs, one of their players was recognized for his efforts in giving back to the community.

Ahead of Wednesday’s 5-2 win over the Weyburn Red Wings, Nolan Roberts was recognized as this year’s RBC Community Ambassador for the Blue and Green.

“Obviously, it’s always a good feeling to get a little bit of recognition. In all honesty, it doesn’t really change much for me though, you just have to go out in the community and do what you can for the people who are supporting you,” Roberts told northeastNOW.

“Obviously, it means something to get the recognition, I do think it is pretty nice just to get that head nod, but at the end of the day, I think it’s just giving back to the people that make playing in Melfort possible that’s most important.”

Each SJHL team is recognized with one community ambassador, being those who best make a difference and give back to the communities where they play.

Every ambassador is celebrated at an RBC Game Night and is honoured by a donation from RBC to a school in their local community.

In Roberts’ case, a $1,000 donation has gone to Reynolds Central School.

“Reynolds is a school that I’ve gone to and read in a couple of times, and one that was suggested to me. It’s been a couple of years since they got it, so I figured they might be able to use the money,” he added.

Mustangs fans will be able to vote online for Roberts as their choice for this year’s RBC Community Ambassador, in hopes of him being the recipient of the RBC Community Award at the end of the SJHL regular season.

An additional honour would be accompanied by another donation ($2,500) from RBC in the player’s name to a school in their local community.

“It would mean a lot to me if I won. Throughout my three years of junior so far, I’ve done a lot of volunteering, and it means a lot to me to give back to the people who make everything possible, so it’d be a huge accomplishment and a huge honour for sure,” Roberts continued.

“(Trevor) Blevins has done a great job building the culture here and Melfort is just a great place to play. We have a good amount of fans every single night and when the playoffs heat up we have a lot of people here supporting us. I’ve played in other towns and you just don’t see this kind of support everywhere you go, so I think it’s important that we give back and make sure that everyone knows that we appreciate it, and do all we can for the community that makes it so great to play here.”
