Mustangs to battle Hounds in final regular season home game Saturday

Mar 14, 2025 | 3:59 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will play their final home game of the regular season on Saturday against the Notre Dame Hounds.

The contest will begin the final weekend set of the season for both clubs, as a rematch will take place between the two on Sunday in Wilcox.

Melfort had a 14-game point streak snapped on Wednesday, in a 7-5 comeback defeat at the hands of the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame snapped an 18-game losing streak on Wednesday, with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Estevan Bruins. During the previous winless stretch, the Hounds were outscored 105-29.

In the last eight meetings between Notre Dame and Melfort, the Mustangs have won them all, by a 37-12 margin.

This season in particular has been much closer, as the Mustangs have taken both meetings, but just by 2-1 scores.

The gap between these two clubs this year, however, is quite large as the Stangs have 62 more points in the same amount of games (54) and own a goal differential that is 201 points higher (+90 compared to -111).

The Blue and Green also have a win percentage that is .574 points higher (.833 compared to .259). For reference, a .574 winning percentage would put a team in sixth place in the league currently, just behind the Melville Millionaires in fifth, who own a .583 percentage, and just ahead of the Humboldt Broncos (sixth) and Battlefords North Stars (seventh), who sit at .545 and .546 respectively.

These weekend games don’t mean anything to either group, as far as standings are concerned, as Melfort has been locked into first place for nearly two weeks, while the Hounds have been locked into last for a bit as well.

The only thing that can change for the Mustangs this weekend is who their first-round matchup in this year’s playoffs will be.

As it stands right now, the Kindersley Klippers are in eighth place with two games to play. If Kindersley gets just one win against the Battlefords North Stars, either Friday or Saturday, they will clinch.

The Klippers would also earn a spot with a La Ronge Ice Wolves regulation loss, also either Friday or Saturday, against the Flin Flon Bombers.

The final regular season game at the Northern Lights Palace this campaign, goes Saturday at 7:30 p.m. between the Stangs and Notre Dame.

The Blue and Green are having a $5 admission night for every fan, courtesy of Prairie North Co-op.
