Mustangs take last game in Notre Dame, set franchise record for wins

The Melfort Mustangs made history twice on Sunday afternoon.

The team was in Wilcox for the regular season finale, which was also the last game in Notre Dame Hounds history.

The Mustangs won the game by a score of 4-2, giving them their 46th victory of the regular season, a new team record.

“What a great group of guys, every single day of practice they want to get better, and it shows. Getting the franchise record in wins is unbelievable, and it just shows the heart and character in the room. Obviously, the job’s not done, our focus is playoffs now, and our hope is to end up in Calgary, so we still got a lot of work to do,” said assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“Tonight was obviously cool to win because it’s history, Notre Dame has had a great group of junior players here for a long time and a lot of NHLers have been through here, so it’s great to be a part of the story. Getting the win as well just made it even better.”

The Stangs’ focus will now be on the lead-up to Friday when they’re set to host the Kindersley Klippers for Game 1 of Round 1.

A strong week of practice will be key, as the team looks to play well in front of what should be another year of great postseason crowds.

“Starting tomorrow we’re gonna have a great week of practice and start dialling in on Kindersley. We’ll be focusing on all areas of the ice, every zone, special teams and anything else. The biggest thing is playing our identity, and if we just stick to that, I think we’ll be just fine,” Scherger added.

“Mustang fans, I like the noise, I like the crowds, for games one and two, let’s start packing the Palace and get ‘er going. Your guys’ support throughout the season has been unbelievable, but in playoffs, let’s ramp it up and bring lots of noise.”

Games 1 and 2 will take place in Melfort on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
