Tallon to retire after 28 years at Evergreen

Dec 3, 2025 | 5:12 PM

A longtime contributor to the Nipawin golf scene will soon call it a career after 40 years in the business.

Derrick Tallon, the Golf Pro and Golf Side Manager at the Evergreen Golf Course in Nipawin, is set to retire in just three months.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at the Evergreen Golf Course; I started my career in the professional golf business here, and it’s provided me with a lot of fun and excitement. It’s been a great career,” Tallon told northeastNOW.

“The decision to retire definitely wasn’t an easy one. I’ve mulled it over for quite a while, but there are just too many other things in my life that seem to be getting more attention, and I’ve had 40 years in the golf industry, so I just felt it was time to move on and let somebody else enjoy the position, and I also wanted to take more time with my family.”

Of Tallon’s 40 years in the business, 28 of those years have come at the Evergreen Golf Course.

Back when he began, all the way back in 1989, the club was just a nine-hole course, and he was their first ever hired golf pro.

“Within four years of my hiring, the expansion discussion took place and was followed through on, so we went from a nine-hole to 18, and it was exciting to be a part of that transition. It was just at the start of golf’s boom, and we rode that wave until the early 2000s. I left in 2001 to move on to the Waskesiu Golf Course, but then I came back in 2010 to manage the pro shop again,” Tallon added.

“It’s been another great 16-year tour of duty, so all in total, it’s 28 years, and the golf course has evolved. We’ve ridden many highs and lows, but golf again, it is peaking, and it’s exciting, but it’s also, I guess, just time to move on. We had a great season here in 2025, so I also felt that it was a good time to leave, leaving on a high note.”

The club will now search for Tallon’s replacement, as he finishes up the offseason.

The hope and plan is to have the club ready to the best of its ability, primed for a new leader in the clubhouse.

“I take a lot of pride in the operations that we’ve grown, and I want to make sure that it’s left in the best situation possible. I’m continuing to work as if I’ll be running the shop next year, so we are taking care of inventory and arranging for maybe some of the staff to return. I want not just my legacy, but the golf course reputation to go on, and I’ll do everything I can to make sure that happens,” Tallon concluded.

“Since my retirement has been announced, I’ve received many very nice comments, and it feels really good to hear those. I’ve been fortunate to have a very good support group, my family’s the biggest part, but I’ve been able to have some very good friends who have come out of my employment at the course too. I just wish to thank everybody who has been a part of my journey, and I hope to see them on the other side of the counter and be able to enjoy the game of golf with them as much as they have in the past.”
