Rivalry Weekend

Mustangs set for home-and-home matchup with Broncos as first meetings of the season

Dec 12, 2025 | 3:26 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will begin a rivalry weekend tonight, as they play host to the Humboldt Broncos at the Northern Lights Palace.

Melfort will play the Broncos twice this weekend (the first two meetings of the season) with Saturday’s contest shifting to the Elgar Petersen Arena in Humboldt.

“They’re a big rival, obviously seeing them in the playoffs two years ago was huge, but honestly, every time we play them it just seems to be that playoff type of game. This weekend, it’s going to be huge, and it’s going to be greasy and tough, so it’s exciting, and we’re just really looking forward to it,” explained Mustangs’ forward Austin Shepherd.

“We just kind of want to get back to the basics here, we’re kind of in a slump here, but we have the team, a lot of guys that know how to play and are big keys of this team, so this is a big weekend for us, and it’d be awesome to sweep the weekend and just keep going from there.”

Both clubs haven’t been their best this last little while, as they hold identical 2-7-1 records in the past 10 games.

The pair also see themselves in unfamiliar territory, outside the playoff picture, in ninth and tenth place in league standings.

“I think the desperation is starting to creep in a little bit for us, especially this weekend, Humboldt is right above us in the standings, so these are a big four points up for grabs. We want to get back on the right track, so these two games are big,” Shepherd added.

“We played better in our last game (on Saturday in Melville), we just need to be able to put the puck in the back of the net more consistently. We’ll dominate and outshoot teams for stretches, but we just can’t find any luck or bounces to go our way. Obviously, we can’t control that, but sooner or later, we hope that some of that will go our way and push us back in the right direction.”

Puck drop between the Blue and Green and the Green and Gold is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
