Horizon School Division Christmas Hamper Project a big success

Dec 24, 2025 | 2:00 PM

The Horizon School Division has helped spread some Christmas cheer.

Their Christmas Hamper Project has supported 147 families and 368 children across the division during the holiday season.

The project is now in its 12th year, and the division credits the generosity of students, staff, families, trustees, and community partners for its growth through the years.

“Children received a wrapped gift, book, treats, and warm winter items such as mitts, toques, and scarves,” the division said in a news release. “Each family also received a $300 grocery gift certificate to help with holiday meals, as well [as] hygiene products, handmade quilts, fresh farm eggs, bags of potatoes, hand-beaded ornaments, and more.”

The project in 2025 is expected to eclipse $65,000, which does not include the many gifts-in-kind donated throughout the division.

“The heart of this project is our community,” Kevin Garinger, Director of Education, said. “It’s truly inspiring to see so many people come together to make the holidays brighter for families in need. Every gift and every hour of volunteer time sends a message that people care.”

The project has helped almost 1,600 families and over 4,000 children since its inception in 2014. Fundraising happens throughout the year, and the hampers are delivered in December. Financial and in-kind donations are welcome to help with future projects, and you can click here for more information.
