Jan 8, 2026 | 5:31 PM

The Humboldt Broncos have begun their trading season, two days ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

Humboldt has sent 2005-born defenceman Oakley McIlwain to the Lloydminster Bobcats of the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

In exchange, the Broncos are receiving 18-year-old centreman Morgan Hackman, along with the CJHL rights to 2006-born defenceman Carson Olsen and 2006-born defenceman Jack Birch.

McIlwain has spent parts of the last three seasons in Humboldt, posting 64 points over 101 games. He also appeared in 20 playoff games, registering a goal and an assist.

The Lloydminster native was originally acquired from the Grand Prairie Storm back in the 2023/24 campaign.

As for Hackman, he has eight points through 29 games with the Bobcats this year, and split last season between the BCHL’s Nanaimo Clippers and the WHL’s Wenatchee Wild. The Vernon, BC native had one point in the combined 28 games.

In Olsen’s case, he also has ties to the Western Hockey League (WHL), as he’s currently a member of the Kamloops Blazers, after beginning the year with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In 39 WHL contests during the 2025/26 campaign, the Warman, SK native has 10 points.

Olsen also has a connection to Humboldt head coach Brayden Klimosko, who coached him on the Battlefords North Star during the 2023/24 season, where Olsen registered 30 points in just 51 games as a 17-year-old.

And finally, Jack Birch is currently playing for the British Columbia Hockey League’s (BCHL) Langley Rivermen, where he’s been held pointless through nine matches. Prior to this season, the Edmonton, AB native spent two full years with the Bobcats, in which he produced 44 points in 98 contests.
