Melfort football player commits to U of S Huskies

A Melfort football player will be continuing his career after high school, and it won’t be too far from home.

Grade 12 athlete Cole Rogers has committed to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies for the upcoming fall.

“It’s very exciting, it’s always kind of been my dream to go play there, especially because of their history and the level of program and coaching they always have. I actually know lots of guys on that team, so I know what I’m getting into and I know what to expect coming out of the program as well, which is very exciting,” Rogers told northeastNOW.

“I think it’s great to have that pressure right away, knowing you’re coming into an organization that has high standards and forces you to play your best. Coming out of high school, people can think they’ll come out right away and be a star, but with the Huskies, you know you’re gonna have to put in the work to become one of those guys, and hopefully help them win the Canada West final like they do almost every year.”

Along with the close proximity to Melfort, and the standards the U of S set, there was more that drew Rogers to the program.

Cole’s father, Dave, is a Huskies alumnus, along with the Melfort Comets offensive line coach.

Cole is an o-lineman himself, having played tackle, guard, and centre at least at one point in time during his high school days.

Dave was also the head coach of Melfort for the entirety of Cole’s time as a Comet.

“I’m just really excited to play where my dad did back in the day, so it’ll be pretty cool to relive that. Having my dad coach me in Melfort, he always kept me in line with everything and just taught me the life skills that I’m going to need to be successful through school and football. It’ll definitely be a new change of pace without him, but I’m excited to learn a new way of football and succeed at the next level,” Cole added.

“I’m excited to be close to home, too, because if any struggles come my way through school or even football, I know I’ll have that great support system not too far away. It’ll be a pretty big jump, but it’ll be good.”

Rogers has enrolled in the business and economics program and hopes to make the CFL following his days as a Huskie.
