Hawks pick up rare win in Humboldt

The Hawks picked up just their third win in Humboldt in five years thanks to Sean Shiels late second period goal on Friday.

Nipawin edged the Broncos 2-1 in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) play evening the season series at a win a piece.

After Humboldt started strong the home team went up 1-0 early in the first period, the Hawks didn’t rebound until the second.

A powerplay goal by Braeden Jockims tied the game for Nipawin, Shiels notched the winner, his second game winning goal of his SJHL career. Gage Roberts did the rest in the Hawks net making 37 saves in the win. Assistant Coach Derek Hutton said the team wasn’t dominant for the full game, but two points at the Elgar Petersen Arena are always appreciated.

“It’s not the full 60 minute effort we were looking for sure, but you have to give Humboldt credit, the first 15 minutes they were all over us,” he said on the postgame show on 750 beach Radio. “It’s something we’ve got to get figured out, we’ve got to get in that playoff mindset right now.”

The Hawks were able to fend off Humboldt’s third period charge, something Nipawin could not do Tuesday in the Battlefords on route to a 6-5 loss to the North Stars. Hutton said Friday’s game was as close as you will get to a postseason game in mid-January.

“Types of games like tonight, the shots are even it’s tight checking, it’s close, they are going to be tight checking, we have to get used to playing these tough games right now,” Hutton added.

The teams will faceoff again on Sunday afternoon in Nipawin for the first meeting of the season at the Centennial Arena.
