The three peat is still alive

Mustangs clinch playoff spot with 12th straight win

The two-time defending SJHL champions will get a chance to make it a three-peat.

The Melfort Mustangs officially punched their ticket to the postseason Tuesday night, with a 3-1 road win over the La Ronge Ice Wolves. The victory marked Melfort’s 12th straight.

“Definitely wasn’t pretty. There were times where I thought we carried the pace of play, but just in general, I thought we were a little on our heels, and maybe a little soft at times. It doesn’t matter at the end of the day, because we got two points on the score sheet, and guys have battled back through a lot during the year, and they earned it,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“The mindset is that we still have to keep going, obviously, we want to keep this roll going. The higher the seed we can get, and the better momentum and better play we can have rolling into the playoffs, that’ll be the focus for us going forward. We definitely can’t take any days off now, just because we’ve clinched.”

Depending on how the remaining four games pan out for the Mustangs, along with results from certain other teams, the Blue and Green could finish anywhere from 4th to 8th place in the SJHL standings by the time playoffs roll around.

The hope now is that the great goaltending continues, as Madden Mulawka had another fantastic performance with 27 saves (which included a pair of breakaway stops), as the Stangs look to track down Weyburn and Nipawin and fend off Melville and Estevan in hopes of giving themselves the most promising postseason path to a third consecutive league title.
