Spring-proofing your home to avoid water seepage

Spring is here, and the snow has already begun to melt. 

That melt could cause issues, however, if you don’t prepare your property. 

Trent Fedorychka of Cooperators – Fedorychka Insurance and Financial Services told northeastNOW there are ways you can help avoid damage to your home this spring. 

“One thing that I definitely recommend now that we’ve got so much snow around the area – and even on a normal year – when you get to this time of year, make sure that you pull your snow away from your foundation.”  

Shovelling snow away from your home will help decrease the risk of water seepage in your basement. Some home insurance companies do not cover water seepage.

“Another thing too is maybe moving some snow off your roof. Just be careful not to damage your shingles,” Fedorychka said. “Just pull the first couple of feet so when the sun hits the roof, then you have some dry shingles for the water to run so it can properly drain away from your house.” 

Clearing snow away from your foundation and making sure you have dry shingles for the water to drain properly are the two major things homeowners can do to help avoid water seepage into the basement.

Fedorychka said completing those tasks is a lot easier than having to deal with the extra labour and headaches involved with trying to clean water out of basements. A basement with water not only means clean-up; it also involves insurance companies, sorting through lost or damaged items, and a lot of unneeded stress. 

It’s also important to ensure all vents are uncovered by snow or ice, as that could lead to HVAC system failures or potentially carbon monoxide poisoning.
