Melfort Reservoir survey signals its importance

The survey about the Melfort Reservoir has closed, and the city is pleased with the response.

Director of Community Services Rob Lok told northeastNOW they were happy that 125 people responded to the survey.

“There was overwhelming support for the Melfort Reservoir and the important role it plays in the community,” Lok said.

From the results of the survey, it was clear that the reservoir was a significant part of many people’s lives.

“A total of 74 respondents shared stories, comments, and personal experiences, highlighting how the reservoir is valued not only as a recreational space, but also as a place for relaxation and enjoyment in natural surroundings,” explained Lok.

The survey’s purpose was to gather stories of how the reservoir affected people’s lives, and to also gain feedback on how to make the area even better going forward. Lok said there were multiple suggestions made in the survey on minor upgrades that could enhance the quality of the space and increase its use.

“Suggested upgrades included regular grass mowing, installing picnic benches, improving dock access, adding trash receptacles, and stocking the reservoir with fish,” Lok said.

Ducks Unlimited Canada currently manages the dam and waterway of the Melfort Reservoir, as part of a long-standing agreement with the City of Melfort. Lok said Ducks Unlimited is in the process of preparing a proposal for the Water Security Agency to assume ownership of the reservoir dam structures.

“The Water Security Agency has indicated that information demonstrating public use and community value is required to strengthen Ducks Unlimited’s proposal, and in turn, Ducks Unlimited requested this information from the city,” Lok said.

There is no timeline yet as to when decisions will be made regarding the reservoir.
