Missing and Murdered Indigenous Walk in Melfort Friday

Apr 29, 2026 | 12:38 PM

The Marguerite Riel Centre in Melfort is hosting its fourth annual Missing and Murdered Indigenous Walk on Friday.

The event will begin at noon at Memorial Gardens with a barbecue.

Kevin Arcand with the Marguerite Riel Centre said all proceeds will go toward supporting the centre’s youth programming.

“Then, at 1 p.m., we’ll begin the walk, led by the Whitefish Juniors drum group from Big River First Nation,” Arcand told northeastNOW

Arcand said they’re honoured to have two Elders join them to offer a prayer and to lead a pipe ceremony.

“This event is held in recognition of Red Dress Day that’s on May 5, which raises awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people,” Arcand explained. “Wearing red is a powerful way to honour those who are missing, support families, and help bring attention to this ongoing crisis.”

Information will also be shared at the event about Blue Jean Jacket Day held June 6. Blue Jean Jacket Day was launched in Edmonton in 2023 to raise awareness about the violence, trafficking, and exploitation of Indigenous men and boys.

“This is an issue that often doesn’t get enough attention,” said Arcand.

Everyone at Friday’s walk is encouraged to wear red and denim in support of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people, and Indigenous men and boys affected by violence, trafficking, and exploitation.

“Everyone is welcome, we hope people can come out to stand together in remembrance and help raise awareness in our community.”
