Bylaw update

Nipawin changing water and sewer bylaw

May 15, 2026 | 3:36 PM

The Town of Nipawin is updating their Waterworks and Sewer Bylaw.

General Manager of Community Services Derek Seckinger said the purpose of the bylaw is to modernize and clarify Nipawin’s existing water and sewer regulations while helping to protect municipal infrastructure.

“The updated bylaw builds on the Town’s previous bylaw by updating language, clarifying responsibilities, and reflecting current operational practices and infrastructure needs,” Seckinger said.

Administration brought forth the updates after identifying areas where the bylaw needed clearer direction around servicing, repairs, sewer use, and system management, according to Seckinger.

“For most residents, there will be very little to no day-to-day impact,” Seckinger explained. “The changes are focused on clarifying expectations and ensuring the Town can continue to operate and maintain systems effectively.”

Seckinger said the bylaw will focus on protecting the sewer system from fats, oils, and grease that can create blockages and potentially expensive maintenance issues.

“The bylaw provides a clearer direction on service connections, repair responsibilities, and protecting the integrity of the municipal water system,” said Seckinger. “Overall, the updates are intended to support long-term infrastructure planning, reduce avoidable maintenance costs, and ensure reliable water and sewer services for the community into the future.”
