Humboldt receives CAP funding for airport improvements

The City of Humboldt is one of nine communities across the province to receive money for airport improvements.

The province has announced $2 million in new infrastructure improvements through the Community Airport Partnership, or CAP, program.

Through the program, the Ministry of Highways will commit up to $934,974 toward the projects. Airport operators will provide the remaining $1.1 million, with construction expected to take place this construction season.

The runway repairs and sealing at the airport in Humboldt is expected to cost $176,000, with the provincial contribution equaling $88,000.

“Air ambulances, firefighting and policing services, along with agriculture and many other industries, depend on local airports across Saskatchewan,” Highways Minister Kim Gartner said in a news release. “By investing in these critical upgrades, we are delivering on our commitment to Protect Saskatchewan, ensuring communities remain safe, connected and positioned for growth, while supporting the essential services people rely on.”

The CAP program is designed to support upgrades to regional, community-owned airports. That includes taxiway and runway upgrades, along with improvements to lighting systems, security fencing, navigational aids, and other eligible infrastructure.

Saskatchewan Aviation Council President Janet Keim said communities can invest in critical airport infrastructure through the continued partnership with the provincial government.

“These improvements help ensure airports can continue delivering vital services that support economic activity and enhance quality of life across the province,” Keim said.

Eligible projects are funded on a 50/50 cost-shared basis between the recipient and provincial government, to a maximum of $275,000. Additional costs are the responsibility of the funding recipient.
