Public hearing for proposed Nipawin Ukrainian Orthodox Church development

May 25, 2026 | 12:09 PM

A public hearing will be held in conjunction with Nipawin’s council meeting tonight about a proposal regarding the former Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

Land planner Jeff Hrynkiw said developers are interested in turning the building into a seven-unit dwelling.  The proposal would require 11 on-site parking spaces, and the applicant is proposing 13 spaces at the front and rear of the church.

“The intent is to have up to seven units inside and make three levels within the building [in the basement, main floor, and upper floor],” Hrynkiw explained. “Each unit would be accessible from the outside.”

The church has been unoccupied for the past seven years.

The public hearing will be held tonight (Monday, May 25) at 7 p.m. Hrynkiw said residents can, and have, provided written responses.

The Town holds public hearings for any discretionary use application to get feedback from residents to assist the council in their decision-making process, Hrynkiw said.

The developer has indicated they would like to begin work on the building this fall, depending on other projects they are involved in. Hrynkiw said it is nice to see interest in reusing an older building that would likely otherwise be torn down.
