The pro shop and public space are also expanding, set to offer a bright, open layout with improved lighting and scenic views of the course.

The improvements will mark a dramatic contrast from the old building, which had deteriorated significantly over time. The previous clubhouse lacked proper insulation, leading to extreme temperature fluctuations, while accessibility and layout were ongoing challenges.

Conditions in the aging structure had become increasingly difficult to manage.

During the winter months, snow would enter the addition through gaps in the ceiling, while rain and even hail could find its way inside during the summer. Dust was also a persistent issue throughout the building.

A long history comes to an end

The clubhouse itself had a unique history, originally located in Kinistino before being moved to Winton, where it served as a school. It was later relocated again to the golf course, where a “temporary” addition was constructed, one that ultimately remained in use far longer than intended.

“The new clubhouse will have a more spacious kitchen with no appliances in public spaces,” Tilford said. “We will also be Public Health compliant with three sinks. The temperature control will be improved, and the floor will be level and not at risk of falling through.”

She added that the building is designed to be fully barrier-free, with enhanced lighting and more usable space for guests.

Fond memories remain

Despite the limitations of the old facility, Tilford said it was the site of many cherished memories.

“Some of the best memories in that old clubhouse are the meals we were able to serve out of the small, disjointed kitchen we worked in,” she said.

She pointed to popular events like the Ladies Harvest tournaments, where volunteers would prepare and serve full meals for up to 80 golfers under challenging conditions.

“Buns and desserts would be made in advance; there were roasters all over the clubhouse, breakers being blown, and salads and condiments fitting into any available cooler space,” Tilford recalled. “Despite that, we always managed to serve a delicious home-cooked meal.”

Looking ahead

The new clubhouse has been built on the same site as the previous structure, with a tentative opening planned for the next couple of weeks.

Construction extended over the winter months, including the installation of heaters, though weather delays have impacted both the build and the initial start of the golf season (this past Friday).

The official grand opening is scheduled for July 1, aligning with a major milestone for the club — its 100th anniversary. The celebration will include a sold-out Centennial Golf Tournament, featuring a 1926 theme in honour of the course’s history.

As it stands, the club is temporarily working out of an adjacent events building, with limited service (green fees, carts, and memberships), until the new clubhouse is fully operational (completed and all inspections passed).
