Fire crews extinguish stubborn blaze at Hudson Bay landfill

Jun 5, 2026 | 4:08 PM

A stubborn fire at the Hudson Bay landfill took a couple of days to fully extinguish.

The blaze began early Tuesday morning, and fire crews could see the flames from several kilometres away.

The household garbage pile was fully involved when they arrived.

“Due to the size of the fire and the volume of the material involved, crews quickly established attack lines and began an aggressive suppression effort,” the fire department said.

Crews and equipment were repositioned through the afternoon to safely attack the fire, and the water supply was fed from a nearby trout pond.

“With assistance from local equipment operators, a fire break was constructed around the entire burning mass to prevent spread [of the fire],” the department said. “Once the immediate threat of flying embers was reduced, crews transitioned into a lengthy overhaul operation, using heavy equipment to dig, spread, and soak burning garbage deep within the pile.”

The fire department monitored and fought the fire over the next few days, with crews on scene until 8 p.m. Tuesday before switching to an overnight fire watch.

Firefighters and equipment operators worked on the fire for the next two days, and by Thursday afternoon the blaze was finally put out for good.
