Chubey trial begins in Melfort Monday

Jun 7, 2026 | 12:00 PM

A major murder trial starts Monday at Court of King’s Bench in Melfort.

Cody Chubey faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of Danielle Dobersheck. The two had been in a long-term relationship.

Proceedings will begin Monday morning at 10, and the trial is expected to last through Friday.

Chubey is accused of killing Dobersheck at a hotel in Melfort in March of 2024.

Dobersheck’s family and her former employer, North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS), have both released statements prior to the start of the trial.

“Danielle leaves behind three children, along with countless individuals whose lives she touched through her compassion and dedication,” the family’s news release stated. “She was deeply loved by her family and community.”

They said Danielle was committed to helping individuals impacted by domestic and interpersonal violence through her work at NEOSS, which made a lasting difference in the lives of many.

They will be holding a March for Justice Monday morning at 10 at Court of King’s Bench in Melfort, and a Candlelight Vigil on June 11 at 7 p.m. at Court of King’s Bench in Prince Albert.

“The family extends their gratitude to North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS), Margaret Riel Centre, Northeast Regional Victim Services, and the City of Melfort for their ongoing support.”

NEOSS has also issued a statement from the Board of Directors.

“Danielle Dobersheck was an employee of North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS), a beloved co-worker, and a dear friend. As court proceedings begin in this homicide trial, we acknowledge the weight this moment carries for her family, loved ones, colleagues, and our broader community. We extend our sincere compassion and support to all those affected by this tragic loss.”

The statement went on to read that “[d]omestic violence, though often unspoken, remains present in our communities. It is a reality we must not ignore. Each of us has a role to play in keeping one another safe—if you see something, say something. We encourage everyone to move through this time with care and respect, keeping focus on those most impacted and on Danielle’s life and memory. If you are finding this time difficult, we encourage you to connect with local support services or speak with a trusted friend or professional —help and support are available. Together, we remain committed to fostering a community where safety, dignity, and accountability are upheld for all”

NEOSS outreach manager Tracey Zwozdesky said that Danielle is much more than a statistic.

“She was a mother, daughter, sister, friend, co-worker, and her life mattered.”

NEOSS Executive Director Joan Bear said that Dobersheck will be remembered not for her violent death, but her laughter, love, and kindness as a co-worker.

North East Outreach and Support Services’ operations include an Emergency Women’s Shelter and an Emergency Children’s Receiving Home, along with clinical and supportive counselling services.
