Union ratifies tentative agreement with Melfort Daycare Cooperative

A contract impasse is over at the Melfort Daycare Cooperative.

CUPE 5080 members have ratified a tentative agreement with the cooperative after members had delivered a strike mandate earlier.

The union said the agreement means significant gains for early childhood educators.

CUPE 5080 bargaining committee member Sera Jones said they are proud of what they achieved in the agreement.

“This agreement brings meaningful improvements and reflects the collective strength of our membership,” Jones said.

The union said the deal brings new language that protects early childhood educators’ wages if the wage enhancement grant is reduced or eliminated.

CUPE President Kent Peterson said the language is groundbreaking in a childcare agreement.

“At a time when [Premier] Scott Moe has promised cuts to childcare funding, this ensures these members will not see their wages reduced,” Peterson said. “It’s a significant step forward for childcare workers in Saskatchewan.”

Peterson said childcare centres still need stable, reliable funding from the provincial government.

“Scott Moe needs to stop these harmful cuts and invest in the future of the province.”

CUPE represents over 300 childcare workers across Saskatchewan, and more than 12,000 across the country.
