Lanigan & District Ambulance Association

Legacy donation creates $700k+ endowment fund for HDHF

The Humboldt District Health Foundation (HDHF) has had an establishment of a $700k+ endowment fund through the Lanigan & District Ambulance Association (LDAA), courtesy of a legacy gift.

The donation is set to generate annual income to support education, training, professional development, and the recruitment and retention of health-care workers across the area.

The main $700,000 will be held in perpetuity, while the additional $30,000 will allow these initiatives to begin immediately.

“HDHF has the ability to manage us into the future. There was nobody in Lanigan directly that could do that, and HDHF actually functions as a collection point for Lanigan and all the surrounding communities. This way, it not only benefits us, but everyone in and around Humboldt as well,” said Rod Greve, LDAA.

“We want to encourage training because ambulance services are short of people, and we really want to make it easier for people to want to choose that as a career, and get some assistance as they go through the training. Again, Humboldt is the perfect collection point for all the surrounding communities.”

Annual earnings from the endowment will be used for:

  • Training that enhances emergency response capabilities, trauma care, and interprofessional collaboration.
  • Education in emergency medicine and medical diagnostics, including diagnostic imaging, laboratory services, point-of-care testing, and other disciplines that support timely patient care.
  • The purchase of simulation equipment, training tools, and educational resources.
  • Professional development initiatives and bursaries that support the recruitment, development, and retention of skilled health-care professionals.

Workforce development initiatives that strengthen health-care teams serving communities throughout the Humboldt District.

“For decades, the Lanigan & District Ambulance Association was proud to serve our communities and to support a strong emergency response system throughout the region. As our Association concludes its work, we wanted our legacy to continue strengthening health care in a meaningful way… for generations to come,” Greve explained.

“This is truly a transformational gift. Rather than supporting a single project or piece of equipment, this endowment invests in people. It will create lasting opportunities for education and training that strengthen our health-care workforce and ultimately improve patient care throughout our district,” continued Lorrie Bunko, Executive Director of the HDHF.

The endowment is to remain intact for the foreseeable future, using only revenue generated to fund eligible initiatives, ensuring a permanent source for support in the process.

The LDAA added they are grateful to BHP for their partnership and support over the years, which made the endowment fund possible.

“BHP is proud of the partnerships we have in the Jansen region. The Medical Diagnostics Training Endowment will create a lasting impact to support the community through education and training for health-care providers for future generations to come,” concluded Karina Gistelinck, Asset President of Potash at BHP.
