Melfort hosting Provincial Senior Baseball Championships

The NorthEast RedSox are the hosts of this year’s Senior Men’s Baseball Provincial Championships in Melfort.

The three-day event, which began Friday, sees tier-three teams from across the province descend on Melfort in hopes of raising the Saskatchewan title.

“We’re happy to bring the province to Melfort and show off the beautiful facility at Spruce Haven, and then also have some good baseball here as well. Obviously, it would be great to come home with a plaque and another provincial championship,” said player/tournament chair, Kalen Senecal.

“You’re going to see a lot of guys that are really good hitters, fairly good pitchers, and defensively we’re moving around all right out there. We appreciate Sask Baseball for letting us bring it into the town, and we appreciate the city for helping us out along the way. Hopefully, we’ll put on a great event that the community can enjoy.”

This marks the first time that the team has hosted provincials in their 10-year history. The Red Sox have won before, though, doing so in 2017 and 2022.

Players hail from Carrot River, Nipawin, Arborfield, Tisdale, and Melfort, and a lot of them were previously on a midget team together back in their high school days.

“We’ve always talked about bringing it here. We realized that we needed to take a chance and be able to put our best foot forward and show off our town. We put a bid in, and we got approved, thanks in large part to the fact that we got the lights at Spruce Haven and a beautiful town that we can bring people to. It was a huge win for us to be able to get it here to Melfort this year,” Senecal added.

“There’s nothing better than having someone being able to come out and cheer for you when you are playing in your hometown. Hopefully, we can draw a good crowd, because we have a great ballpark atmosphere under the lights. If we can get some fan support along the way and hear a cheer after we get a base knock, or something better than that, it’s a great time too. Our guys are excited.”

The RedSox typically play in the Saskatoon league throughout the year to stay sharp, and are hopeful to host again in the future should this year see lots of success. The tournament medal games will be played on Sunday.
