BOCN, Pêmiska Tourism major planners for Treaty 6 commemoration
Thousands of people from across Saskatchewan are expected for the 150th anniversary commemoration of Treaty 6 to be held next week at Fort Carlton.
The gathering, which is scheduled for Aug. 20-23, is estimated to draw between 1,000 to 2,000 people daily, with approximately 2,500 people expected for the final commemorative ceremony and the visit of the Governor General of Canada on Aug. 23.
Beardy’s and Okemasis Cree Nation (BOCN) member Kevin Seesequasis is the director of operations responsible for logistical planning for the major event, as well as the director of the band-owned Pêmiska Tourism. He explained while the commemoration will be a good opportunity for publicity for Pêmiska Tourism, it will also be much more than that.
“As far as Pêmiska Tourism’s role in this, we’re just happy and honoured to be a part of this journey. We are grateful to our leadership and the Office of the Treaty Commissioner for trusting us to support this work,” he remarked.
