Mustangs send Mulawka and Ewasuk to Devon

The Melfort Mustangs have made a trade with the Devon Xtreme of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).

Melfort is sending away goaltender Madden Mulawka and forward Connor Ewasuk in exchange for netminder Luke McKechnie.

Mulawka spent two full seasons with the Mustangs, where he produced a 32-14-3 record with one shutout over 60 games. The 20-year-old product of Edmonton, Alta., had an exceptional 2024/25 campaign with the Blue and Green, having posted a 2.24 goals-against-average and a .906 save percentage in the regular season, and a 1.50 goals-against-average and .917 save percentage in the playoffs.

Ewasuk, meanwhile, didn’t become a Stang until midway through the 2025/26 year, following a trade with the Lloydminster Bobcats. In 17 contests with Melfort, the 19-year-old forward from Beaumont, Alta., recorded a goal and an assist.

As for McKechnie, the 18-year-old goalkeeper from Lumsden, Sask., comes to the Mustangs following half a season with Devon. He spent the first half of last year with the Whitecourt Wolverines, also of the AJHL, while playing two games in total with the Yorkton Terriers during the 2023/24 and 2024/25 SJHL campaigns.

A silver medal winner in this past year’s World Junior A Challenge, McKechnie’s best numbers came with Whitecourt, where he accumulated a 2.91 goals-against-average, an .893 save percentage, and an 8-3 record in 13 matches.

“The Mustangs would like to thank Madden and Connor for their time in Melfort, as we wish them all the best in their futures,” said the Mustangs organization in a Facebook post. “We would also like to welcome Luke to Melfort.”
