Melfort RCMP golf tournament adds funds towards Dale Frier Memorial Rink

The Melfort RCMP held their annual charity golf tournament this past weekend to raise funds for a community project.

In total, the tournament raised $5k for the Dale Frier Memorial Rink upgrades, being done by the Melfort Kinsmen.

“We just enjoy giving back to the community, and we try to pick something that we work hand in hand with every year. This year we weren’t sure what we were going to donate to, but this project was something that was going on in the community, and we decided it was a great thing to have for youth and adults alike,” explained tournament organizer, Lori Scott.

“The community always supports us in donating prizes and raffle items. We always have four major hole-in-one sponsors as well, and it’s the same people that do that every year. We also had a guaranteed 50/50, so it’s just a fun day; we go and play 18 holes of golf, and there are lots of silent auction and raffle prizes.”

The tournament saw 23 team entries, a handful of which were RCMP members. About six members in the event were from Melfort, while a pair came from Prince Albert and Peace River.

“The tournament’s mostly for fun, so we go out there and just have a fun day. You don’t have to be a good golfer to golf in it,” continued Scott.

According to Scott, most teams entered the tournament quite late, and the 23 teams were down compared to the 31 teams the event has had before.

She is hopeful that people will be a little more eager next year.

“It would just be nice if we could get a lot more teams out in the future and have everybody sign up a little earlier so that we know that the tournament’s going to go ahead,” Scott concluded “It seemed like there was a lot of teams that signed up kind of last minute, so it’s just easier from a planning perspective to know that well in advance.”
