While the City-Wide Registration night was more focused on sport groups, especially geared to children and youth, the new Activity Expo is wider in scope.

“Sports are still an active part of it, but there [are] really good recreation, culture, arts groups, and volunteer opportunities,” Marshall explained. “We wanted a place to be able to showcase all of that for our community, and somewhere that people can come in one evening and get information on all of the things there are to participate in and discover in Melfort.” 

Another reason for the tweak to the registration event is the changing demographic of the city. Marshall said more newcomers to the area bring a new perspective, and the city can also find out more about their interests and what can be offered now and in the future. 

“Definitely a lot of newcomers were there last year, which is really great to see, because it’s a great way to connect with the community too,” said Marshall. 

The Activity Expo allows people to see the variety of organizations and activities around Melfort, and in some cases to sign up.  There are a few new options this year, with some wellness-centred organizations taking part. Marshall said the choices at the event are also catering to all age categories, which is important. 

Sports organizations that have traditionally been at the city-wide registration will be there, including hockey, ball, and Skate Melfort. Marshall said while those types of organizations are generally focused on youth sports, others like the Melfort Curling Club offer a wider age range.  She added that the Activity Expo is an opportunity to explore what Melfort has to offer. 

Another change last year that will continue Thursday is organizations representing karate, tae-kwon-do, and quilting doing on-site demonstrations.  

“This evening is about experiences as well,” Marshall said. “You can discover, but you also have some hands-on opportunities.” 

Marshall said they’ve added a food option this year based on feedback, with the event taking place during supper hours. People can also pick up an Activity Expo connection passport which can be stamped at the tables. Once it’s filled, it can be entered to win a community prize pack.
