Another step forward for the rehabilitation of the Historic Post Office in Melfort.

During a pancake breakfast at the iconic structure on Wednesday, the Prairie North Co-op presented the Historic Post Office Advisory Group (HPOAG) with a $30,000 cheque to be used toward the restoration of the main floor of the building.

HPOAG Chair Gailmarie Anderson told northeastNOW that the donation is wonderful.

“We will be renovating the floor, which is our next task for the renovations,” Anderson explained. “We’re already going to be starting on the doors, and so once we get the floor done, this first level will be complete.”

Anderson said they owe a lot to Prairie North Co-op for their help in completing the main floor.

Prairie North Co-op Marketing and Community Relations Coordinator Kelsey Whyte said they’re excited to work with the group renovating the historic landmark.

“It means that it’s going to be another space [in which] the community can gather and be surrounded by like-minded community members,” Whyte said. “We’re looking forward to continuing that partnership and continuing to work with them to make their vision a reality.”

While there’s no timeline for the completion of the main floor restoration, Anderson said the work is ongoing, and many renovations have already taken place.

“We’ll just continue until we get all three floors done and the community can use the entire building.”

The first level of the Historic Post Office can be rented out for any groups or individuals that may want to use it. Anderson said it makes a great location for wedding and grad photos. The main floor is also leased to the Melfort Arts Council, Melfort Youth Evolution, and Youth Matter Canada as an arts and culture hub. Melfort Trade Alliance Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lorana McComber also has an office on the main floor.

Whyte said Prairie North Co-op and the Historic Post Office both have long, local ties.

“We were established in 1914, and the Historic Post Office was established in 1912, so it just shows that if you build it right, how long it will last.”

Anderson agreed, adding that the Prairie North Co-op is also part of the legacy in Melfort.

“It’s the spirit of the community, and it’s long-lasting, and we’re very happy that people are supporting it,” Anderson said.

Prairie North Co-op is a different kind of business, said Whyte.

“We put our communities first, and we are established in five different communities, and what we really focus on is understanding what that sustainability means.”
