A pair of former Humboldt Broncos captains are once again leading the charge, this time at the university level.

Forwards Landen Stromme and Cage Newans have been named to the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners leadership group after leading the club to a BCIHL (British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League) Championship this past season.

“It’s been awesome to share this journey with him; we had a really tight bond in Humboldt, and we also lived together, so we pretty much spent every day together. Now to do it again as adults and university students and win that championship that we’ve been trying to do together for a while, it’s been unbelievable, and our friendship has only grown stronger. I wouldn’t want it any other way,” said Newans.

“Typically, you don’t think you’re still going to be teammates with a guy after your junior career is over. You never know where the road is going to take you, though, and it’s been a dream. So many opportunities have opened up, and we’ve created a lot of memories along the way. Being a kid from small-town Saskatchewan, I never really expected this, and it’s just gotten better as time has gone on,” added Stromme.

Newans, a product of Qualicum Beach, B.C., spent parts of three seasons in Humboldt, one of which came as the captain (2023/24 season).

As for Stromme, a native of Choiceland, SK, he also suited up for parts of three seasons with the Broncos, serving as assistant captain under Newans before wearing the ‘C’ in the 2024/25 campaign.

Now, Newans will wear the ‘C’ for VIU, with Stromme once again being a trusted assistant.

“We learn a lot from each other. Obviously, he’s a year younger than me and has a couple fewer years of Junior experience, but he helps me a ton and makes me try to be the best leader I can… Obviously, our past in Humboldt helps a ton too, so I just want to be the best version of myself and lead by example. It’s an honour to wear a letter no matter where you’re playing, and to have as much support as I do, I couldn’t ask for better,” Newans explained.

“I think it’s a great motivator to have this level of responsibility, especially as the defending champions, and knowing that we’re going to be hosting playoffs this year. We know we earned our ring last season, so now we’re ready to stand on this hill and defend it tooth and nail. I wouldn’t want to be part of any other organization, and there’s no guy I’d want to do it with,” Stromme continued.

Along with the championship in 2025/26, the Mariners were league winners in 2023/24 and had a franchise-best regular season in 2024/25, before losing in the finals.

Newans is entering his third season for VIU, putting up 53 points (23G, 30A) over 50 games. In 189 games with Humboldt, meanwhile, the 23-year-old had 190 points (70G, 110A).

In Stromme’s case, he is now in his second year with VIU, producing 19 points (7G, 12A) over 23 games. With the Broncos, he had 51 points (19G, 32A) in 152 games. The 21-year-old also had prior experience with the Tisdale Trojans and North East Wolfpack.
