Mustangs win Tuesday night OT contest over Bombers

The Melfort Mustangs beat the Flin Flon Bombers for the second straight time Tuesday night, needing extra time to do so.

A 1-1 tie after three periods of play was broken in overtime, as Mustangs forward Lincoln Rogers tipped home his first goal of the season and his first game-winner of his SJHL career.

The Melfort victory was considered a comeback one, as they trailed 1-0 in both the second and third periods; however, they ultimately prevented the Bombers from getting revenge in the end from the 6-1 beatdown in Flin Flon last Friday.

“We knew they were going to come out hard, and that they were going to try and respond, and they did. They were super physical in the first, and we kind of had to weather the storm for that a little bit, but I thought we were pretty good for the most part,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“Obviously, a few things that we got to clean up, but we ultimately stuck with it, though. I think the biggest thing was that maybe we didn’t exactly have our best; pucks weren’t flying into the back of a few empty nets, we got a lot more opportunities that just didn’t go in, and sometimes we can get frustrated when that happens, but we were able to stick with it, and we ended up getting rewarded in the very end.”

The Stangs are now 2-0 this season against their Northern Manitoba divisional foes, and are 3-3 at home this year.

The Blue and Green have now played every single above .500 team in the league at the Northern Lights Palace.

Melfort’s next two games will come away from their own barn, however, as they head south this weekend.

The Mustangs will visit the Estevan Bruins on Friday, before travelling up to Weyburn on Saturday to take on the Red Wings.
