Response in Weyburn

Mustangs grab three of four points on Southern Swing

The Melfort Mustangs flipped the switch Saturday night in Weyburn, taking down the Red Wings 3-2.

It was a big response for a Mustangs group that didn’t have their best the previous night in Estevan, when they fell to the Bruins 4-3 in overtime.

“Our start was unreal; we came out with a lot of jam, we kept the puck at their end, we were physical, and we were hard on pucks. After that, there were some ebbs and flows in the game as we kind of traded momentum, but we kept doing a great job of getting back to what made us successful,” explained assistant coach Clarke Huxley.

“Games like these are ones you gotta learn how to win; playoff style games. It was back and forth, and obviously they’re a good team that we knew was gonna push back. We did a good job weathering the storm, and we held it out in the end.”

Melfort scored the first three goals of the game before Weyburn responded with one of their own.

The Red Wings then cut the deficit to one with about 30 seconds left when they had pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, going 6-on-5.

While that made the contest quite close late, the Stangs never wavered and closed out the weekend with the win.

“You either win or you learn, and we did both this weekend. Friday, I think we learned that we gotta be prepared no matter what, especially on the road, and we were able to translate that into Saturday. We didn’t make the same mistake twice and came out hard, so the boys understand the expectations for the future,” Huxley added.
