Hawks head to Humboldt looking to keep point streak going

The red hot Nipawin Hawks hit the highway to Humboldt Tuesday looking for a second win over the Broncos this Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season.

On Oct. 9 Nipawin routed the Broncos 7-3 at the Centennial Arena. The win was Nipawin’s third of the year and second in what is now a six game point streak including five wins. Over the stretch the Hawks have scored 42 goals and allowed just 14 against. Head Coach Tad Kozun said his group has been playing well this month.

“We can’t really complain about the way we have been playing and the amount of goals we’ve scored,” Kozun said Tuesday following the team’s morning meeting. “The biggest attest to that is the guys are starting to find their groove here. We aren’t going to score that many every night, but we are finding different ways to win and doing things the right way. That’s the biggest caveat that we are happy with right now, we are scoring a lot, but we aren’t giving up many either.”

Not to be lost in the offense is the play of Connor Johnson in goal for the Hawks. The 20-year-old from Calgary didn’t start until game four of the season and has earned wins in five of six starts. His one blemish is a 4-3 overtime loss to the Warman Wolverines. The Hawks sit with a record seven wins, four regulation losses and that overtime loss in Warman.

Humboldt is also playing well with six wins in their last 10 contests too. The Broncos are coming off a loss in Estevan Saturday. Kozun said his club needs to be ready for the test on Tuesday.

“They have a good team there as well; we’ve got to be ready to go. We’ve had them once already and they are going to be hungry to get back at us for that game a few weeks ago. We just need to keep playing our game and make sure we defend hard, move pucks, and transition fast. There is always room for improvement,” he said.

Faceoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Elgar Petersen Arena, the pregame show on 750 Beach Radio of Nipawin Chrysler Dodge Hawks Hockey will start 15 minutes prior to puck drop.
