Nipawin meets Millionaires for first time Friday

The Nipawin Hawks will make their first visit to Melville on Friday to face the Millionaires.

The first of four meetings feature two of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s hottest teams. The Hawks have points in seven straight games; the Millionaires have points in five in a row.

Nipawin is coming off a 3-2 shootout win in Humboldt on Tuesday. The Hawks were down 2-0, not even five minutes into the game before battling back to force overtime and eventually a shootout before earning the extra point in the SJHL standings. Head Coach Tad Kozun said his team was resilient after faltering early.

“I liked the way we continued to battle and continue to play our game and stick to our game plan and get rewarded for it,” he said Friday morning after the team’s morning meeting. “It’s always tough when you come three games where you fill the scoresheet. I like the way we hunkered down and won a tied hockey game.”

The Hawks lead the SJHL in goals scored at 66, one more than Weyburn, but the Red Wings have played two more games. Melville has allowed just 29 goals against, the lowest in the league. Kozun expects another tight defensive game.

“We must stick to it, we can’t get frustrated, you just must keep working. The opportunities will come if you continue to do the right things. They are going to defend hard; you can’t get frustrated by that, you’ve got to keep working and find your opportunities,” he added.

Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at the CN Community Centre, the pregame show on CJVR is at 6:45 p.m.
