Chasing The Game

Slow start costs Hawks in Melville

Nov 5, 2026 | 10:11 AM

The Nipawin Hawks fell 3-1 to the Melville Millionaires on Friday, as a slow start ultimately cost them a chance at victory.

Nipawin trailed 2-0 after the first period in Melville, as they ultimately had to chase the whole game against the ‘best defensive team in the league’.

“I thought we got exactly what we deserved. We didn’t start on time, and you give a team like this that defends hard a two-goal lead, where you’ve got to earn your opportunities, then you’re just constantly chasing. It’s been the same song the last couple of games where we’ve been chasing and just haven’t started on time, so obviously, Van (Taylor) and I have to do a better job of making sure our group’s ready to go for puck drop,” said Head Coach Tad Kozun postgame.

And while the Hawks did have chances throughout the game to get it back to all square, their ‘league-best power play’ didn’t help them either, as it went 0-for-5 on the night.

“We did hit a lot of posts, so we did have some chances from our power play that’s really been our catalyst all year. Unfortunately, just couldn’t get it done, but honestly, I still thought it was a bit too casual. We weren’t doing things with a purpose, and maybe that just comes from not being ready to go in the first period. All of a sudden, you have to ramp it up and ramp it up, but it was just a little too late,” Kozun added.

The Black and Gold did respond in the last 40 minutes, outshooting the Mills 32-16, after being outshot themselves 23-8 in the first.

After a Jack Janzen marker in the second, the third period entered with a 2-1 margin; however, a Millionaires empty-netter was the ultimate icing on the cake.

“What we learned is that you have to start on time. They outmanded us on a lot of pucks, we turned a lot of pucks over, and they were hitting us in the first period because we just weren’t moving our feet. We allowed them to make those checks, but I thought in the second period we started moving our feet. When they’re a big team like that, you’ve got to move your feet so they can’t catch you and make hits, but we’ve got to do that for a full 60,” concluded Kozun.

“Moving forward, we look at the fact that we ultimately had a good month of October. Obviously, we’re not happy with this effort, but overall, a really good month, especially when you look at how we started in September, which wasn’t great. Now, we regroup, set our sights on a good November, and just get right back to it. Reevaluate and make sure we’re ready to go because there are no easy nights in this league. Find a way to start on time, and just be ready to execute right off the bat.”
