Melody Motors driving away hunger in northeast

Nov 9, 2017 | 3:19 PM

Food bank shelves across the northeast will be restocked thanks to the ‘We Scare Hunger Campaign.’

Melfort based Melody Motors spearheaded the initiative for the fourth year and said they had their best response yet with just over 7,500 pounds of donated food in October.

A dozen area schools along with three hockey teams, the Melfort Mustangs, Nipawin Hawks and Tisdale Trojans all helped in some fashion. Melody Motors marketing manager Rebecca Levick said each group came up with their own method to contribute.

“It’s their own choice as to how they collect the food. Some schools do competitions between elementary and high schools, some between classes. They really get the ball rolling that way,” Levick said.

Levick said one school in the region really impacted the drive.

“The one school that really caught me off guard was St. Brieux. They are a fairly small school and they raised over 993 pounds of food,” Levick said.

Melody used their gameday sponsorships of the three hockey teams to encourage the public to bring non-perishable items to donate. They also had bins set up at the dealership.

Food banks in Melfort, Tisdale, Nipawin, Hudson Bay and Porcupine Plain will all benefit from the donations.

Levick said handing over the donations is a rewarding experience.

“[It’s] seeing how excited the people who run the food banks and how happy they are to receive the donations. Knowing it’s going to a good cause, you can’t really beat that feeling knowing you helped participate in something so large and you helped so many communities,” she said.
