Melfort celebrates Canada Day

Canada Day activities were moved indoors due to the forecast but the celebration still went on without a hitch.

On Friday afternoon, organizers made the decision to take their plans inside the Northern Lights Palace.

Committee Chair Gail Marie Anderson said they didn’t want to take the chance of having to cancel everything due to weather.

“It’s always nice to be outside for Canada Day but not when the weather says there is going to be thunderstorms and rain showers,” Anderson said.

Celebrations began at 2 p.m. with the kids decorated bike parade followed by a colour parade by members of the legion, cadets, and RCMP.

Local dignitaries including MLA Todd Goudy, and councillor Glenn George were on hand for opening ceremonies.

Member of Parliament Randy Hoback was in attendance to bring greetings as well.

“I’m so proud to be Canadian, we are so blessed to live in this country and so blessed to live in this riding,” Hoback said. “When the City of Melfort goes through the effort to put on an event like this, to see all of the volunteers and all the kids out here, you want to be part of it.”

Hoback was in Prince Albert for the morning of our country’s birthday, then stopped in Melfort for the afternoon, and intended to head to Nipawin for the evening.

Melfort’s activities also included entertainment from Constant Reminder and a barbecue supper hosted by the Melfort Rotary Club.

“New Canadians, old Canadians, everybody comes and participates and we are all equal here, and we all respect each other and that’s what makes Canada that great country,” Hoback said.
