‘Waiting for over a year’: BBBS of Melfort still needs mentors for kids

Jul 2, 2019 | 1:10 PM

While it may be summer holidays, local kids are still in need of adult mentors year-round.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Melfort has eight children on their waiting list for an adult who can spend a few hours during the week to be a positive influence in their lives.

According to BBBS Melfort’s Development Coordinator Kathryn Carswell, some kids have spent more than a fair amount of time on the list.

“We’ve had some kids that have been waiting for well over a year to be matched,” Carswell told northeastNOW. “Hopefully those kids will be matched shortly and more kids will be added to the list.”

Carswell said more kids from across the northeast region are expected to be added on the list during the summer months.

BBBS Melfort ‘s criteria for mentors is being over 18 years of age and including a little brother or little sister to their daily fun activities for a few hours a week.

“Mentoring is beneficial not only to the mentee, but we find that the mentors themselves often discover that their lives are also enriched in the process of making a difference in the life of a child,” Carswell said.

Potential big brothers or big sisters can apply online.
