Northeast woman wins trip to anywhere in the world

Heather McLaughlin had a one-in-434 chance to win Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Melfort’s Big Getaway Draw.

McLaughlin said she wasn’t confident her raffle ticket would be drawn during the Melfort Exhibition on July 21, giving her a roundtrip for two people to any WestJet departure location in the world.

When BBBS Melfort’s Development Coordinator Kathryn Carswell gave her the call, McLaughlin said it took time for it to set in.

“My sister started texting me the next day and I told her about the win,” McLaughlin told northeastNOW. “She was like ‘Why didn’t you tell me sooner?!’ And I said ‘It didn’t set in until now.’”

WestJet donates two roundtrip tickets for anywhere they depart to in the world through their ‘WestJet Cares for Kids’ program.

It’s the second year BBBS Melfort has received a donation. They weren’t able to sell out of raffle tickets like the previous year, although 434 tickets sold for $20 each is still a welcomed number.

“We’re going to use this for programming, our community matches, as well as group activities,” Carswell said.

BBBS Melfort intends on holding another fundraiser on Sept. 18, potentially another Big Foot donut sale.

In the meantime, McLaughlin has to decide where she and her husband will depart to. Last year’s winner embarked to Hawaii, although McLaughlin said she’s leaning toward the Maritimes to fulfill a trip she’s always wanted to go on.

She’ll have one calendar year to claim her trip.
