Melfort MLA named provincial and legislative secretary to the premier

A year and a half after he won a byelection in March 2018, Todd Goudy has assumed another role in the legislature.

The Saskatchewan Party member of the legislative assembly (MLA) for Melfort was officially appointed as the provincial secretary and legislative secretary to the premier on Tuesday, Aug. 13, following the resignation of former provincial secretary Nadine Wilson in July after she was charged with two counts of assault.

Goudy told northeastNOW Premier Scott Moe informed him of the appointment just one day before it was officially announced.

“It’s an honour and a privilege,” Goudy said. “I can’t say I saw anything in my future, other than I was excited to be able to fill a role serving our constituents and friends. To be down in Regina serving this constituency was all I really wanted to do, and any other roles are a privilege. I really appreciate the opportunity.”

Goudy admitted his excitement to assume the secretary roles are also matched by a little bit of fear, just like when he assumed office as an MLA to succeed from his friend, the late Kevin Phillips.

While he said he’s not confident in his knowledge for the job responsibilities he’s about to assume, Goudy said the same people who had helped him learn the role of being an MLA – Premier Moe, the provincial cabinet, the administration, and Kevin Phillips’ wife April – will assist him emotionally and technically.

“You may be fearful and overwhelmed at first and the learning curve is steep, but the kind of people that we have helping us develop and mature… if you’re willing to learn, there are all sorts of great mentors to teach you,” he said.

Three northeast area MLA’s have also retained their additional roles. Humboldt-Watrous MLA Donna Harpauer will stay as the finance minister, Carrot River Valley MLA Fred Bradshaw is still the legislative secretary to the minister of environment, and Kelvington-Wadena MLA Hugh Nerlien will stay as the legislative secretary to the minister responsible for SaskTel.

The 28^th Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan will resume on Oct. 23, 2019.
