Humboldt Big Brothers Big Sisters hosting first Drive-In fundraiser

It’s the year 1960 for at least one day in Humboldt.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Humboldt and Area will host its first drive-in movie event to fundraise for its programming, which helps children match with their role models and grow in confidence.

Along with fundraising to help the 21 children on a waiting list find their role model matches, the inspiration for BBBS of Humboldt and Area was to bring a different family-friendly activity to the city.

“Many of us have fond memories growing up with drive-ins,” BBBS of Humboldt and Area’s Community Development Coordinator Jodie Hergott said. “There are not many in existence anymore, so we wanted to bring that nostalgia back to town. We’re hoping to make memories for those up and coming youngsters and show them the fun of a drive-in while supporting a great cause all at the same time.”

BBBS of Humboldt and Area is bringing in Fresh Air Cinema – a company from Red Deer, Alta. that travels across the country setting up outdoor movie viewing experiences – to set up a drive-in on the Discovery Ford parking lot on Highway five on the city’s west side.

Hergott said they’ve sold nearly two-thirds of their 131 parking spaces online at Event Brite, although spots available will depend on the size of vehicle with trucks and SUV’s in the back and smaller cars up front.

“Price is per vehicle, so if you can find a bunch of friends it’s really an inexpensive night out,” she said. “If we don’t sell out online then we will have options at the gate. You can drive in and we’ll get you a spot that’s open.”

The drive-in event on Wednesday, Aug. 21 will be a double-feature, with a family-friendly film at 8:15 p.m. and a mature audience film at 10:30 p.m.
