Mustangs Down Mils

Mustangs make it two in a row, defeat Millionaires

Sep 21, 2019 | 7:34 AM

The Melfort Mustangs are back to .500 after defeating the Melville Millionaires 6-3 on Friday, Sep. 20 on the road.

The Mustangs opened the scoring just 4:12 in as Ryley Lanthier ripped a shot five hole on Hunter Adams. It was Lanthier’s first as a Mustang.

Melfort’s lead didn’t last long as just over a minute later, Braden Larochelle had some time in the circle and beat Tanner Martin to tie it up. It was almost like a chess match in the first period as neither team really dominated the opening 20.

Colton Schell got things going on the powerplay for Melfort when he fired a shot on the blocker side, top shelf to make it 2-1. That was followed just over two minutes later by Greg Parker who used some patience and put one five hole on Adams to give Melfort the 3-1 lead.

Zack Smith got in on the action just over halfway through the second and made it 4-1. At that point, Melville started to gain steam. Nic Porterfield and Jaden Hewes scored just minutes apart and all of a sudden, it was 4-3. Mustangs Head Coach Trevor Blevins said they maybe got a bit complacent with the lead, but they did a good job recovering in the third.

“They adjusted,” he said. “What I liked about it was just the composure. We didn’t get nervous in the third, we played with confidence and even though we were only up by one, we executed and played a hard game.”

In that third period, Melfort didn’t score until late, but they locked things down defensively and only allowed four shots on goal in the third. Marco Lopez scored shorthanded with a few minutes to play, and then Kenzie Arnold sealed the deal by icing one into the empty net to make it 6-3. Blevins said he likes where his team is trending.

“We’re getting better everyday,” he said. “And today was another good step in the right direction.”

Melfort will look to keep the train rolling at the Warman Showcase this coming week. They take on Notre Dame on Sunday, and then Yorkton on Tuesday.
