Honouring Murdered and Missing Indigenous Persons

The Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Saskatchewan (AFCS) is working on a project that focuses on Re-Igniting Sacred Fires MMIWG2S.

The Government of Canada – Department of Women and Gender Equality established the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls Commemoration Fund.

The commemoration fund will honour the lives and legacies of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and LGBTQ2S individuals and, will also increase awareness about the missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ2S in Saskatchewan.

This project is steered by a guiding committee who include the Families and Survivors of MMIWG2S as well as local Community Organizations.

The objective is to support activities/events that will be developed toward improving the healing legacy for commemorating the lives of MMIWG2S, and increasing awareness about MMIWG2S in Saskatchewan.

We are collecting information that will be used to build the framework to identify actions that will lead towards better understanding of MMIWG2S relevance to Canadian citizenship and public safety.

This framework will later be used to help communities and regions educate Canadians by creating public awareness and implementing actions, the actions identified in the MMIWG2S Calls for Justice.
