Melfort Historic Post Office receives Lt-Gov. Heritage Award
Seven years of work on Melfort’s Historic Post Office was recognized by Heritage Saskatchewan.
The Historic Post Office received a Physical Heritage Conservation award for its near $200,000 window replacement project over the summer. The new windows were metal wrapped to reduce maintenance. They were also designed to match the previous windows, so the building’s historic character remained intact.
While the award acknowledges the window replacement, Melfort’s Director of Development, Planning, and Communications Brent Lutz said it’s symbolic of the work put into the Historic Post Office.
“The projects have been so incremental in their own right,” Lutz told northeastNOW. “They haven’t been substantial that we would have applied for recognition by way of an award. Over time, these repeated projects have accumulated. The [window replacement] was a major project. What was really special about that project is we managed to accumulate a budget of excess of $200,000 and none of it came from tax dollars.”
