Mustangs Beat Klippers

Mustangs down Klippers before week long break

Oct 12, 2019 | 8:52 AM

The Melfort Mustangs have now gone 11 straight Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League games without a regulation loss.

On Friday, Oct. 11, the Mustangs got a 3-2 home win against the Kindersley Klippers. The win came after the Mustangs lost in a shootout on Wednesday, Oct. 9, a game where they had a two goal lead late. Defenceman Alex Rondeau said this time they kept the pedal to the medal.

“Last game we kind of shut it down once we got the lead and we kind of stopped playing,” Rondeau said. “Tonight we just kept playing hard and that’s why we got it done.”

The first period of the contest went back and forth with both teams getting some solid chances, but nobody could get on the scoresheet.

Melfort got on the scoreboard first with Zach Anderson scoring about nine minutes into period two on a great wrist shot that beat Klippers goalie Zach Johnson over the shoulder. Kindersley responded less than two minutes later on a powerplay as Austin Nault scored his eighth of the year. Zack Smith got the Mustangs the lead back late in the frame to give Melfort the 2-1 lead after two.

Scott Mackenzie tied the game for Kindersley just a minute and a half into the third period but it wouldn’t stay that way for long. A Mustangs two-on-one had Rondeau tip in a great pass from Adam Nobes to give Melfort the 3-2 lead with about 13 minutes to play. The Klippers pressed hard for the rest of the period, but goalie Shawn Parkinson and the Mustangs locked it down and got the win as they head into Thanksgiving weekend.

“I thought we were a bit slow at the beginning,” Rondeau told northeastNOW. “But then once we started working harder, we got it done. It’s so huge for the guys before a big week off to get the ‘W’ and keep going.”

Melfort is back in action on Friday, Oct. 18 as they visit the Estevan Bruins. Their record now sits at 8-2-2-1.
