Gearing up for winter

Community winter clothing exchange taking place ahead of winter season

Oct 22, 2019 | 10:25 AM

The Maude Burke School will be the site of a community wide winter clothing exchange on Wednesday.

Staff at the school puts out a call for gently used adult and children winter items each year which are then set out from 3:45 to 5 p.m. for the public to take what they need, free of charge.

Outreach worker Brandi Moskal said the exchange has been happening for at least 10 years now continues to be needed in the community.

“We usually get a lot of donations and pretty much everything is gone by the end,” Moskal said. “I know we have people that look forward to it.”

Donations can be brought in to the Maude Burke School, Reynolds School and Brunswick School anytime up until the event and during the exchange at Maude Burke.

“Sometimes people bring them to the event when they come to look and they leave what they have and take what they need,” Moskal said.

The emphasis is put on children’s clothing but adult sizes are also encouraged as well.

“We know that kids outgrow their winter clothing often before they wear it out so we run the exchange to help out parents by recycling clothes,” Moskal said. “Parents will also take for themselves during the event as well.”

Items including jackets, sweaters, mitts, toques, scarves, and boots are all welcomed.

Moskal also stressed the exchange is for all of Melfort and the area, not just for the Maude Burke students and their parents.
