Google Expeditions Virtual Reality comes to Melfort

People of all ages got to try out virtual reality (VR) on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Melfort Public Library.

About 80 attendees got to try out Google Expeditions Virtual Reality after the Wapiti Regional Library Headquarters purchased the equipment for the area. Head Librarian Penny Markland said they had people of all ages try the technology.

“It was quite good,” she said. “We had one lady who was 100 years old, still excited to try new things. We had a group come over from Nirvana, and it was really awesome actually to see them still excited to try new things.”

There were also participants as young as five-years-old trying out the VR.

Currently, the technology allows people to see pictures in 3D. They were able to see things like the base camp at Mount Everest, the moon, and historical images like a castle and a seige.

Markland said they brought the technology because with it being Library Week, they always try to bring in something new for people to see.

“The theme for Library Week was ‘Building the Future’,” Markland said. “So we thought this would fit right in.”

Unfortunately, the technology had to go back to headquarters in Prince Albert to be available for the other libraries in the area.
