Melfort searching for new fire chief

Melfort is on the hunt for a new fire chief.

Jason Everitt is leaving his role as fire chief with the city at the end of the year to take a position as the fire chief in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Everitt has served in the role and as a bylaw enforcement officer since July 2018.

“Jason’s done a tremendous job and really built our fire department up to what it is today,” City Manager Ryan Danberg said. “We’re certainly going to miss him.”

The city posted the opening on its Facebook page on Monday.

Resumes are being accepted until Nov. 15, and Danberg said it has yet ot be decided when the new candidate will begin their duties.

Everitt will remain with the city until the end of December. To minimize disruption, Danberg hopes to have someone hired by Jan. 1, 2020

The city manager said they won’t leave any stone unturned to find the ideal candidate.

“We’re certainly posting in all different areas of the province as well as western Canada, and we believe we’ve got a pretty attractive position here and we’re hopefully going to see some qualified candidates come across,” he said.

Whether the next fire chief will cover bylaw enforcement duties is currently under review, Danberg said.
